Form Follows Function. Function Follows Form.

Natural teeth, in their genetically determined and unworn form, reflect an optimal morphological adaptation to the functional environment in which they exist and the chewing forces to which they are exposed.

At the same time, function is influenced by form. Tooth position, cusps, fossae, ridges, and guiding surfaces affect the way teeth interact during chewing and mandibular movement. Misalignment, restorations, habits, and other external factors can negatively affect functional loading and movement. Over time, the resulting wear can progressively alter or even destroy the original morphology.

Understanding this continuous interaction between form and function is one of the fundamental principles behind the way Natural Esthetics approaches the masticatory system.
